C Money and the Players — Family Business — CD REVIEW
When not touring as Slightly Stoopid’s trumpet player, C-money is coordinating the jamming musician’s paradise in The Players Inc and with a long list of seriously talented guest musicians, the collective has just released its first studio album - Family Business. Upon first listening, what is interesting is the tracks featuring guests vocalists sound heavily influenced by the guest’s original musical sound. Art & Civilization featuring Fishbone’s Angelo Moore (Dr Maddvibe), sounds like an original Dr Maddvibe track with its multi-layed saxophone parts, same goes for Kyle from Slightly Stoopid on Ganja Train and G Love on the album’s funky first single Aroz Con Pollo. This being the case, Family Business plays more like a compilation album, with the only real common element is some seriously smooth beats. In terms of my favorite songs featuring C-money’s trumpet playing, you can’t beat the sultry sounds on B37H and the album closer Scrilla Love. Both tracks showcase a sound that C-money doesn’t get to express too often during his day job. Heard in a live setting this collection of songs would definitely get the people moving, however on record it almost sounds like the perfect dinner-party record or to enjoy alone with headphones - and I mean that in a completely complimentary way, as the album has a depth and a style of sophistication that can be appreciated remotely or consumed deeply. You don’t get too many opportunities to explore an album and discover new musical elements or even styles with each listen, so if you are looking at broadening your horizons Family Business is a great starting point. |
