SWRFans.com Interview w/ Bud Gaugh

Discussion of recent features at The Pier

Postby Tdub » January 12th, 2012, 6:50 am

UMfan: Is there anything you wish you had done differently with SWR (band name, touring, album recording, etc), or do you have no regrets?

Bud: Yes, all of the above! In hind sight I would not have used the name. I didn't want to in the first place, I was talked into it and I would like to apologize to certain people and the fans for trying to justify or talk them into it as well. The Recording was awkward, It felt rushed, felt like I was playing someone else's parts/songs. Other than Panic, paper cuts, and safe and sound, it pretty much was. Some of the parts that were added after the fact really ruined some of the songs for me, for my liking. I also never agreed to do extensive touring for three years straight so that soured me on this thing. I don't know, maybe it was just not having passes for my friends because someone gave them all to their toothless craigslist hookers instead, lol!

sublimeklump14: Do you see yourself returning to the band in the future? If so what does the timeframe for that look like?

Bud: No, I am done with SWR. I would be into playing music with Eric Wilson, however
Bud: Well for the first few months its all about the new baby. I will be doing stuff with the guys from SexRat very soon and even during the first few months this year, writing, jamming, and maybe even an impromptu show. Del Mar might tour Japan for our friends over at One Big Family Records later in '12. Maybe.

UMfan: Can you see yourself ever working with Eric or Rome again outside of SWR?

Bud: I will always have an open spot on the stage for Eric, he's my family.

UMfan: Some rumors were floating on fan sites about a LBDAS reunion. I think they were squashed as just people dreaming...but is that something you have thought about?

Bud: I am not opposed to it, if thats what you mean. Will it ever happen???... I don't know, it would have to be under the right circumstances for me to participate. One specifically is the drug use issue, that's a huge thing that led to my decision to leave SWR. I am not going to worry about finding another brother dead or in the hospital because of that. It is just not worth it!

1 UMfan: What are your best memories of SWR? Were there any particularly memorable shows?

Bud: Ya, The first and the last! haha. Really the first show at the Cantina in Sparks was great. The SWU show in Sao Paulo, Brazil was pretty crazy too, 85,000+ people. It was pretty incredible to play to that many people all at once. I always play my heart out, no matter what is going on outside of the stage area, I give it my all. It is just the way I play, I love it! So for me every show really is my best, until the next one.

UMfan: Thanks for the work you put into SWR and for letting me be a small part of it. I was 16 when Sublime ended and I never thought I'd get to see you and Eric play together. I am SO thankful I got to see you in Portland November 2010 and August 2011. It's a shame the situation is so messed up, but I know you made a lot of fans happy and I have made a lot of new friends because of SWR and by spreading the message about the band. Best of luck and I got your back no matter what you decide to pursue. I owe you!

Bud: To the contrary my friend, I owe you! It is the love you have for Sublime that fuels my fire and for that I am forever grateful!!

Peace!!

Finally! Pulling the curtain back! Great job UMFAN!

Someone should get a LBDAS fan page going and if nothing else, get them to do a reunion show! 1 show. Start small. LBDAS 1 show and bring out Half Pint, B. Levy, 2na, Will.I.Am, Paulie and the whole crew to rock an old school LBDAS show! Apparently, Bud's open to it :)

We can do a toothless hooker check at the door haha. Good read!

Thanks guys.

I opened it up for questions to my SWR friends on facebook and SWRfans.com because everyone had their own questions on so many different things. I should have opened it up for ThePier too. I really apologize for that. I was being lazy or dumb or both. I have been busy and haven't spent as much time here as I would like. I'll try to fix that because I love the Pier.

Some fans have had other questions for Bud. I don't know if he's willing to do a second interview or not, but it might be worth a shot to ask. So if you have some questions post them here and I'll see if he has time to answer more. This will probably be it though. I don't think he's going to sit around answering questions for 2012. :)

PS- What TDub posted is just part of the interview. the full one is at SWRfans.com in the Forum (sorry you have to register there too). He answers questions about what gear he uses and some other stuff. Probably the quotes above answer the questions that most people have though.

Wow, that had to be one of the realest interviews I've ever read. Bud did not sugarcoat anything.

The fact that regardless of everything that happened he would still be into playing music again with Eric Wilson says A LOT about his feelings on Rome. Not only that, his comments on Yours Truly are EXACTLY how I feel about the album. Outside of 3 songs, most of the album is just songs from Rome's back catalog.

Being that this interview in general is SPOT ON with how I felt about everything, it is going to make it extremely hard for me to support SWR moving forward.

Agreed. Rome's a good song writer, good singer and i'd be more supportive of a solo endeavor minus the "Sublime" label. Just call it "Rome". You still have a bad ass bassist with Eric Wilson. I know hes doing a solo album this year and maybe thats a prelude to them ditching "Sublime" in the name.

Torres, you use to be the main LBDAS guy with the fan site and all that! Work your magic, i'll back ya, lets rally a LBDAS Reunion show. One step at a time. From there, maybe it'll enable a recording session if nothing else! :) I miss that true Long Beach sound & influence thats been missing since LBDAS. Well maybe not missing, cause you still got 3rd Alley, Zen Robbi an other groups holding it down but theres def been a void!

Webdesign has changed A LOT since the old days where a simple geocities page would suffice. However, blog sites are the current preferred format so a tumblr may be the way to go.

When it comes to an LBDA reunion, I swear they don't even have to get the entire lineup back together. As long as Jack and Opie are on vocals, there isn't much else they need for it.

Good on Bud! Sounds like he should have thought the whole thing through a bit more in the beginning.

But what is complete bullshit, is they are advertising SWR tour in AUS in April and Bud is featured on all the promo posters. This is completely misleading and I feel sorry for all my Aussie bros that are not aware that Bud will not be playing at these shows!

Did anyone else pick up the recent Japanese cd release, the Best of Skunk. It has LBDA on the cover and has a good mix of lbda, perry bravo, toko and more!

Ya that sucks anytime there's false advertising used to lure in an audience but at the same time, i think the audience, if they're sublime fans, will more than likely enjoy the show, but for the diehard fans that may be stoked to see Bud & Eric live, will ultimately be bummed when they dont recognize dood behind the drums or that signature long hand snare drop that we all know & love Bud for! :)
