Discussion of recent features at The Pier

Postby Buttercup » June 18th, 2012, 2:10 pm

I thought I would create a topic where we could consolidate our thoughts on what we are enjoying and maybe not enjoying this year.

Firstly, I think DH - Cabin by the Sea will be dominating my playlist over the summer. Easily the best band in the RR scene right now.

New Stick Figure is solid. I am interested in hearing the new Pacifc Dub. They have never impressed me much in the past, but the first couple of songs I have heard from Tightrope display much improvement.

Also looking forward to new: No Doubt, Stoopid, Iration, JBB and Pepper.

Has anyone heard the new Tomorrow's Bad Seeds, I can't believe how bad it is. The Pier's three star rating of it is very generous. I don't know how a band went from singing about Warrior(s) to Ballerina Girls.

definitely agree with you on most. Cabin by the Sea is dope, I was a little skeptic at first since I didn't like some of the singles at first but it's definitely a killer album. I'm also looking forward to the new Pacific Dub. I only like a few of the tracks from previous releases, but their new singles have been ILL! and (sigh), yes the new Tomorrow's Bad Seeds was VERY underwhelming. I was so stoked as well since they're one of, if not, my favorite band in the scene at the moment, and it was incredibly mediocre. I've recently been hooked on the new Tallest Man on Earth album, that guy's a damn genius.

I haven't heard the new Bad Seeds album in it's entirety, but the lack of buzz about it around the scene tells me all I need to know. Based off the samples I listened to on Amazon, I'd have to agree with underwhelming, although I do like One Way.

I like the new DH, but I think I have to give it a few more listens for it to catch on. Burial Ground has been playing nonstop for me since I've gotten it. Absolutely love it, and Stick as a whole. I've also been clicking into 77 Jeffersons latest, Truth & Love. Some solid songs on there. I always go back to Three Legged Fox, 10 Ft., One Drop and iLa Mawana. Feel good vibes I guess.

I've actually been a fan of Pacific Dub for the most part, so I'm looking forward to Tightrope. Definitely pumped for the new Iration and Stoopid too.

Any one been listening to Giant Panda Guerrilla Dub Squad? I got dragged to a show not expecting much. I was fairly impressed. They released TWO full lengths this year. 'In these Times' (psychedelic roots and dub album)

The other, 'Country' (Country is, a mix of the band's most popular songs performed with an acoustic backbone as well as never before recorded material. With this release, the quintet has charted new territory and put together a lyrically-driven roots Americana album, which will both excite their fanbase and bring in new converts.)

They really grow on you! I would at least say give them a listen!

EDIT: Haha, if i only looked above this post! Duh... LOSING!

The new Dub Pistols album is fantastic, I'm surprised more people here don't get into them.. They have a sampler on youtube that gives you a real good feel for the album.

Waiting For Green - really good stuff. solid vocals, musicianship and production on their latest project.
Cris Cab - dig his indie stuff more than his new stuff.
DH - Cabin By The Sea is solid. Disguise is super sick.
Iration - Time Bomb. I have worn this record out a long time ago but it still is GOOD!
Franti - saw him live this summer and their new song "Long Way Home" is a game changer.
