If you don't know you can stream the whole thing over at spotify. What is everyones take on it? For me I think this is one of the best records this "scene" has ever seen. This is the DH record I've been waiting for since I first heard them on those sense boardwear (i know some cats here know about that) comps back in the days. I feel the first and last and 2 second to last tracks are kinda filler for me, but there are a solid 12 tracks in here that they just rip up! While I've grown away from Matisyahu in recent years even his verse on "Dance All Night" seemed to fit perfect. I think my favorite colab is on "Your Love" with Ky-Mani. Duddy's playing and the overdubs he used on some tracks are amazing too. I was actually debating pre-ordering this as I was going off live videos of tracks from youtube. After having this on repeat on spotify I'm completely blown away.
All other bands need to take note of this one, this record is fresh! Check it out if you haven't. They've come a long way and deserve it.

Wow! Pretty cool so far. I ALMOST lost hope for them. Though it is a bit poppy/produced in comparasion to the orginal 7 song ep. Its got a great vibe.... I also have a soft spot for the DH. But yeah, i'm a bout a quarter of the way through and I'm excited to bump this by the fireside or on the way to the beach!
As for...."I think this is one of the best records this "scene" has ever seen." Easy there. Theres some great records in this 'Scene' Though only a small handful over the last 2/3 years. In fact since 'Any Port in A Storm' the only stuff that has really knocked my socks off has been the last two Passafire Releases. Maybe some 10 Ft. as always. I could be forgetting something but if so, it must of not been that great.

My sentence was "For me I think this is one of the best records this "scene" has ever seen." Notice (which you decided to leave out) the "for me" bit. This is my opinion as everyone's taste in music is different, for example compared to their earlier stuff I thought the last passafire was a big let down, even so, they are very hit or miss with me, some songs I love, others I could do without. Out of every (except the last one) i like about 50% of a passafire record. You'd probably disagree, and thats cool. As for it being more "poppy/produced" you mean less hip-hop, like no more drum machines and digital beats? I'm not a producer or engineer or pretend to be one but I think Any Port would have had much more production thrown at it than this one, and I believe this was written by the full band, I think its a welcome addition. I don't find it any more poppy than anything off Any Port....anyways back on track, like you said and like myself, maybe because of time or lost of interest I wasn't nearly as excited for this as I am today, just trying to let people know its a dope record and to check it out. DH is back.

I would say the album is a little more safe than earlier releases in regards to lyrical content etc. I really dig all their music, particularly when they have the hip hop style thrown into the mix. There is a little less of that here too. But overall Cabin by the Sea is a high quality release and I would say just as good as their earlier releases if not better.
Jared has evolved into a really good vocalist, even though I love him at his best when he is dropping his dope rhymes.
I also think it will probably be the best release this year. Stoopid, Iration and co have a high bar to aim for.

I agree that it is less poppy/produced than Any Port... And that's what I like! I however was referring to the 'Dirty Demo' The 7 tracks that was almost straight acoustic. That blew my mind! Acoustic hip hop! Music is subjective... Even still you have to at least admit the 'Scene' has got stale and unoriginal. But what we DO agree on is how killer this album is gonna be! Not top ten yet IMO. My passage from the top ten best after the jump....
10...10 FT. Ganja Plant--------- Bass Chalice
Highly underrated band whose albums sound has a drifty, bluesy, dub 70's reggae roots feel that every one I play for just loves.
9... Dirty Heads---------------------Any Port in A Storm
Very young album, I can tell this one will stand the test of time. Pushes the envelope towards hip-hop yet keeps the reggae vibe alive. A breath of fresh air for the scene.
8...Long Beach Dub Allstars---Right Back
Helped keep the vibe alive after the dismissal of Sublime. Gave fans of this music hope during a hard time, without them it's hard to say what reggae rock would be today.
7...Bargain Music-------------------77 003
The first experimental album of the genre. Probably brought a new wave of fans into the scene. Nice mix of singing and rapping.
6...Expendables---------------------Open Container
Great mix of ska metal punk and reggae that was produced well. This was the "breath of fresh air" a couple years back when the scene got stale.
5...Pepper------------------------------Kona Town
Love or hate Pepper, this disc brought poppyness and swagger that the scene lacked. Brought a new breed of fans in.
4...Slightly Stoopid----------------Closer to the Sun
Could put 'Barrel Ride" here as well. Only going to pick 2 Stoopid albums, I really like how this one flows with the acoustic/electric vibe not as over produced as other Stoopid albums, live vibe.
3...Slightly Stoopid----------------Acoustic Roots
Perfect album to put on at the beach,a party, cruising or chilling fireside. Seemed to solidify there status amongst many. I think this one brought a lot of recognition to the scene.
2...Sublime-----------------------------Sublime
What I got, Santeria, wrong way, doin' time amongst others got and still get major airplay. This has to be the album that exposes the most outsiders to reggae rock.
1...Sublime-------------------------------40 oz. to Freedom
The last 9 albums I just named are phenomenal, yet this album finds a way to trump over them almost in another league. I have probably listened to it 5,000 times over the last 15 years and it only gets better. The best album in my opinion of not only the reggae rock scene but the best album of all time. I don't think there will ever be another one like it.

Erie, Hard to argue with your 10 albums. I remember years ago The Pier had an article on the definitive top 10 reggae rock albums and your list is very similar. Personally I would throw the movements on your feet album in there and maybe chapter 11 live and direct. Maybe passafire submersible too. Easily their most creative effort and brought a new reggae rock sound previously not explored.

That's what it was from! We all made our own back when people discussed music on here! Ahh... The good old days. If I made an updated list one of those Movement albums would for sure be on there! Ironically, I have been listening to that C11 lately too. Next I'm gonna make a list of the the most UNDER rated albums... Sound interesting?

Me too! I would also have to agree, Passafire's Submersible deserves to be seated on the above list somewhere. I'd also be okay with switching out Kona Town for No Shame. Glad to see someone else recognizing 10 Ft., and again, I wouldn't mind seeing Bass Chalice give way to Hillside Airstrip. Feeling Cabin By The Sea, a couple songs don't do it, but overall a solid, feel-good album. Matis on Dance All Night fits in nicely, where anything with him usually stands out too much. Loving the collab with Ky-Mani too.

Not on Spotify in the UK, Any Port In A Storm has never been on it either. Sucks.
I have heard the studio version of 'Hipster' on YouTube, though, and can anyone shed some light on why the last verse on this version http://youtu.be/UGUHvveDQJU didn't get put on the full song? I much prefer it to what they've got instead.

Brought my laptop outside to watch the sun.... Uh, rise? Yeah long night. But I'm happy to be listening to this. Thanks Bombora. After a few listenings. I have to admit, In less Stoopid's 'Top Of The World' Has something to say, I would call it 'Album of the Year' Gonna be Tuff to beat. Should make summer fun!

Yeah I'd defintely put Passafire's Submersible and/or Start From Scratch and any number of 311 albums in there. But anyway I've heard Cabin By The Sea a handful of times now and I am enjoying it more than Any Port In A Storm so far. On the negative side, there are a few songs that seem like throw away songs, such as "Best Of Us" and "Notice", which I think would have made the album feel more solid if those type of songs were left off. Also, a few songs have some indistinguishable parts. For example, both "Spread Too Thin", and "Your Love" have the EXACT same part as in "Lay You Down", the "Caress Me Down" style start and stop guitar riff. Even more weird is that "Spread Too Thin" and "Your Love" are back to back. Same goes for parts of "We Will Rise" and "Best Of Us", parts of those two songs seem to be exactly the same and they are also back to back. On the plus side, there's a good number of super dope songs. My favorite is probably "Disguise", I think they killed it with that one. Even though I had that criticism of "Your Love", I still think that's a great song too. "Dance All Night" is also a home-run for them too, Matisyahu was definitely a great fit. I saw live videos of them performing "Hipster" before and really dug it, the recorded version does not disappoint. I wish the ending instrumental "Farewell" was extended out into a full song, it has a really cool vibe and would've made for a nice tropical jam. So while I was not a giant fan of DH before, I think this album has most definitely increased my appreciation for them.

I can't kill them for the one drop.... Its a common reggae bite. Some of the songs do sound similar, but who's don't?
Tell me if these sound similar in rhythm............
Toko Tasi, Half Pint and the Dub Allstars- 'Need a Girl' (turn volume up on right)

Dirty Heads- 'Notice'

What the hell are the two of you talking about. Chev, your complaining about the little "dancehall" parts? Then you might as well complain on how many songs start with just acoustic guitar and then the band comes in and say they all sound the same. Thats ridiculous.
Erie, where do you get one drop from? While I'm no drummer, I'd say they use more of a hip hop style, and even if they did use a one drop beat for a few measures they throw in a hip hop style fill. I wouldn't call any of they're songs one drop though.

That's what I'm saying... One Drop, Dancehall style, horns, Up tempo guitar strokes etc.... Its all just part or this style of music. There for I'm not gonna kill them. It's just part of their sound.

relax dude, I wasn't complaining just pointing out that those songs have identical parts. It IS a common move in reggae songs, but their most well known song does it, their newest single does it, and then the track directly after that also does it. Just saying it's a bit of overkill on it. As stated, I still dig the album as a whole.
