Roots of a Rebellion’s “No Control” Background:

“‘No Control’ is about the different kinds of love and desire we experience throughout our lives,” shares guitarist Marco Martinez. “I wrote this song over the course of two years after moving back to Nashville. The first verse reflects that period of young love, fear of real commitment, and a lack of control over desire. The second verse shines light on how a deeper love can come at anytime and change the way you see things in life. From young, carefree exchanges to a developed and mature relationship, we experience similar feelings of releasing control over our emotions and trusting another person with them.”

A Brothers Instinct was produced by Craig Welsch, who is well known for his work with 10 Ft. Ganja Plant, Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad & State Radio, among others. “With a foundation of each song in place, Craig was really able to help us take our songs to the next level. We learned so much from Craig in the studio and it was definitely a game-changing experience for us,” drummer Troy Wiggins proclaims.

Wiggins continues to explain, “All six Roots band members write and have various ways of introducing lyrics, melodies, and songs to the group. While some songs are started together, other songs come from individual members who have a more complete idea of how they want a song to sound. With ‘No Control,’ Marco came to us with a ‘rough draft’ of the song that he recorded in Garage Band. Once the foundation and song structure was in place, we re-approached the song to create fresh parts that were unique to each band member. This type of songwriting accelerates the process in creating new music and is just one of many ways we write music as a band.”

The band takes a methodical approach toward writing and recording, fine tuning the music as a band before addressing it with a respectable producer who is capable of taking their foundation and helping them build it up from there.

Wiggins details that: “Once we got into the studio with Craig Welsch, he really helped us strengthen and improve certain aspects of the instrumentation, song writing, and structure of ‘No Control.’ For example, he suggested creating a more ‘staggered, skipping’ feel to the song which can be heard in the hi-hat pattern that was recorded in the studio. The same of Craig can be said for the rest of the songs on the album.”
