“The Cog In The Machine” Background:
California punk rock outfit, Lagwagon is set to release it’s eighth studio album on Oct. 28, 2014 through Fat Wreck Chords entitled Hang. This will be their first full-length album in nine years – since 2005’s Resolve.
The current line-up has been together for practically sixteen years of the bands quarter century existence so the new record will have elements of various parts of other albums. Front man Joey Cape has typically written and pre-arranged their music before bringing it to the rest of the band, but admits the process for Hang was more collaborative.
“To me it’s different than any record we’ve ever made but in a good way, in a really good way,” Joey says enthusiastically about the new album. “This recording process was more collaborative than anything else we’ve done.”
Joey brought the entire band to the table early on to find out what they collectively wanted to do.
“As a band, it’s the only time I can say everyone in the band loves the record. Even I, as the songwriter, usually have some regrets.”
Even though Cape writes the songs and has figurative veto power on most of the changes made to their songs, something different happened with this recording process where he simply did-not care.
As for the new song, “Cog In The Machine”, that the group is giving away for this week, Joey told The Pier: “‘The Cog In The Machine’ is the core sound of Lagwagon in our current state. It was the most collaborative effort for (the album) ‘Hang’. Everyone in the band brought something to the table. For this reason, I think it best represents the new album.”

To sum it up, Lagwagon is a California Punk Rock band based out of the Santa Barbara area & they’ve been setting up mosh-pits since 1990. All of their albums have dropped under Fat Wreck Chords, including this 8th studio release, Hang. In support of their new album, Lagwagon will take Hang on the road, starting Nov 6th in San Diego, CA. Supporting them on tour will be fellow punk veterans Swingin’ Utters & This Legend. The tour will go in and out of Canada, making its way through the Midwest to the east coast, before wrapping up on Dec. 11 back in Denver, CO at the Summit Music Hall. From there, the band will be headed to New Zealand to play the Westfest ’15 at Alexandra Park on March 3rd 2015.
