Jaya The Cat’s “Amsterdam” Background:

A Good Day for the Damned will be Jaya The Cat’s 5th studio album (and 7th overall release) dropping November 17th. The group returns with a 15-track record singing songs of heartbreak, happiness, political confusion, and existential madness over a theme of optimism. For track 8 on the album, a song called “Amsterdam,” vocalist Geoff Lagadec tells The Pier its an ode to their hometown of sorts, giving fans and tourists a more realistic perspective of what Amsterdam is. The song feels like a cross between Rancid and P.O.D. with hard hitting drums, melodic & distortion guitar licks over a driving rock sound proclaiming how overrated Amsterdam is.

Here’s what Geoff had to say about “Amsterdam”, peeling the curtain back on the song’s meaning:
“As someone who lives in the middle of the red light district, it’s always kind of amused me how the cities reputation as the epicenter of hedonism in Europe stacks up against reality. People come here with the expectation of it being totally mad, but most bars close at one on the weekdays and there aren’t even night-shops in the center. You can get far more twisted and into trouble in a city like Berlin or Hamburg for longer and weirder and cheaper than you ever could in Amsterdam.”

Geoff continues on, concluding: “I was walking home drunk one night thinking about this and I suddenly stopped on the bridge over the canal in front of my house and I thought, ‘You know what, who cares?’ This city is one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever seen and I love it. It’s about seeing our home more as a lady, rather than a lady of the night. And really, you can get weed anywhere nowadays.”

One reason to go to Amsterdam would be to catch a live Jaya The Cat show as the group doesn’t currently have any US dates on the calendar, but with a new record this would be the best time to see them live.
