Destroy Babylon – “Judgement” Background:

Destroy Babylon have spent over 17 years refining their unique, immersive sound into a militant mix of progressive reggae rhythms, striking harmonies, and populist politics. The five original members grew up together in Hudson, NH, formed Destroy Babylon in 2001, and settled into Boston in 2005. Here, they started their own label, Music ADD Records. The appropriately named label has released 20+ albums from a number of different bands – all of which share the same small circle of Boston musicians – and spans the spectrum from heavy punk to afro-beat funk.

The June 2017 release of Shapeshifters was produced by Craig “Dub Fader” Welsch (10 Ft Ganja Plant, Slightly Stoopid). The song “Judgment” was a collaboration between all members musically, with lyrics co-written by Kellee Webb (vocals, percussion) and Rob Carmichael (vocals, guitar).

Describing the track, Kellee tells The Pier: “Lyrically speaking, ‘Judgement’ is a frustrated call to embrace diversity, self-sufficiency and independence from a greed driven, heavily flawed and uncaring capitalist system. Being repeatedly told the way you want to live is not the norm, is not accepted, is not possible, spawned this song. Over time, the constant, negative dialogue that I was receiving about the supposedly unorthodox ideals and practices in my life and the lives of my friends left me feeling irritated and raw.  Sick of the relentless nay saying from a variety of sources, this was my way of telling them that, no matter how alternative the lifestyle, we will persevere.  Whether they like it or not, our ideals are becoming the norm.”

As mentioned in our 2018 Most Anticipated Albums feature, a new side-project of the group The Flying Vipers focuses strictly on vintage dub, and recently collaborated with Jamaican legend Johnny Clarke on a 7″ single, “Highest Region.”

Drummer/percussion Marc Beaudette concludes: ‘Destroy Babylon’ was the Bad Brains song/slogan that started it all for us, but Music ADD has always been the way we live. The only thing better than exploring the endless world of music is creating it with your brothers and sisters.”
