  • 10 Ft Ganja Plant was nice enough to give The Pier a brand new song off their newly released album titled “Shake Up The Place”. The new track for FREE download is called “My Roots” which features legendary Jamaican reggae artist Sylford Walker. Lucas Cooper, a representative from 10 Ft. Ganja Plant’s record label, ROIR, explains the circumstances surrounding the track “My Roots” as such:

“The relationship with Mr. Walker came about because 10 Ft. occasionally writes a column on their website called “The Plant Speaks” about artists or albums that have meant a lot to them. In one of these columns (Read Here) members of the Plant wrote about their love and inspiration for Sylford Walker’s album “Lambs Bread”.”

“Mr. Walker became aware of this homage & connected with the band- soon after, as 10 Ft. were recording “Shake Up the Place”– they asked if Mr. Walker would drop vocals at a studio near his home in Jamaica.”

“The tracks was originally recorded by 10 Ft. Ganja Plant at Rear Window Studio Boston, which they later produced as well. He went on to record two vocal tracks for “Shake Up The Place”, the other being “Hardtimes” another very spiritual roots reggae tracks.”

    10Ft Ganja Plant Background:
For nearly ten years now, the mysterious roots reggae collective 10 Ft. Ganja Plant has operated under a dense shroud of anonymity. Although it’s no secret that the group primarily consists of former/current members of John Brown’s Body, their albums rarely feature personnel credits, and the band has played only a handful of live shows to date.

Much like their publicity, the band’s music as well is generally shrouded in dense layers of fog and echo. Unlike John Brown’s Body who are taking roots to the future, 10 Ft. Ganja Plant seems more than happy to dig the roots deep into the past, to the days when Studio One bustled and skanked with fresh roots riddims, and Tubby and Perry’s mad scientist experiments expanded the role of the recording studio and the studio engineer to match the emerging modern world of infinite possibility.

The band plays reggae with a purist mentality, is supposedly based out of Boston, and, on their new album, “Shake Up The Place”, 10Ft worked with classic roots-reggae artists such as Sylford Walker, Prince Jazzbo, Winston Watson of the Meditations and Blood & Fire veteran mastering engineer, Kevin Metcalfe.
