DEADMAN RELAY INTERVIEW
(from left to right: Wesley, Roach, Arron D, Ace Falco)
Five years ago KB Posse was certainly one of the more popular reggae, rock and hip hops acts around. Then the little band from Kansas disappeared. Resurfacing earlier this year under the new name Deadman Relay, the band is slowly coming back from oblivion with a new MySpace page and four new songs online for download. The Pier got in touch with vocalist/guitarist Arron D to find out exactly what the hell has been going on?
The Pier: Why the name change from KB Posse to Deadman Relay? Did the line-up change?
Arron: Line-up is still the same, well, the last rendition of the original. KB had four different bass players. The last of which, Wesley, is still holding up the ass end of Deadman. He’s a good man; he’s got his job cut out for him.
The name change is for a couple reasons. We had some trouble with our internet guy. We lost contact and he had most of the passwords and shit to our MySpace the dotcom and tons of other shit. So, we said “fuck ‘em”. We hadn’t done shit for a while cause school started to become a motherfucker. And, we just said “the hell with it”, we’ll start over. Also, it started to get sort of blasphemous because only half of the band was smoking at that time. Especially, the possibility of getting enough paper for KB,….without dealing that is.
The Pier: What was your favorite highlight from the KB Posse days?
Arron: Shit, I don’t know. They were fucking rough. Everybody was pretty fucked up. We liked partying with George Clinton. He’s a lifer; a true gentlemen. The man loves his music and will drop everything to freestyle wherever. There are a lot of good KB memories all around.
The Pier: Are you recording a whole new album? If yes, what progress has been made on it so far?
Arron: There is a new album coming beginning of next year. It’s been five years since we’ve released anything. We’ve still been recording, for the most part, so we have little odds and ends all over. Plus we’ve got enough material to fill a CD twice, so this is going to be a seventy minute disc.
I had surgery for a deviated septum because somewhere along the line I guess I broke my nose. It was starting to fuck with my vocals, so that was a pretty long break there. The biggest deterrent was college, but I’m a fucking engineer now so I can get back to doing what makes me feel good and that’s unprotected sex with minors.
The Pier: Any plans to do shows or tour behind it?
Arron: I don’t know what will happen. The money’s got to be right and it never seems to be. We will probably do some heavy gigging locally around Kansas City with the occasional road trip show. If you know any major sponsors, please send them my way. And if you need convincing, Roach gives good head.
The Pier: Can we expect the same mix of genres from the past, or does the new stuff lean more towards one direction now?
Arron: Well, it’s roughly the same type of flow, man. Much reggae, much punk rock, little this, little that, little bluesy, little hophippy, little more metal than usual, maybe. Same vibe, though. I hope you dig it.
The Pier: I'm sure we will. Since all past CDs, DVDs, and merch were limited print and seem to be long gone, any plans to re-release anything or just concentrating on the new stuff?
Arron: I’d love to re-release, but most likely we’d just eventually get all that shit out on the porn box. The fucking internet is a cheap and easy way for us to be able to get that shit back out. Otherwise, we have to pay to print all that shit back up, the jackets and the replication of the discs and all. But, that was all created under KB and the big push is toward the Deadman shit, so I don’t think that we will ever re-release, but don’t hold me to that.
The Pier: Who would you like to tour with?
Arron: Shortbus, Aggrolites, Authority Zero, Stoopid, Dirty Heads, NOFX, Toots, Pennywise, Amy Winehouse and Britney Spears.
The Pier: There are a lot more bands on the scene than when KB Posse first started. What do you think of them? Like any in particular?
Arron: I love bands where I can tell they fucking love what they do. Or, at least believe in what they do. When they believe what they do, it shows in the quality of their music. Early blues music had passion, love, hate, jealously, need; you just don’t find a lot of that feeling much anymore. But, there are bands that do it. I like Toots. I like the Aggrolites. I really like Hank Williams III, that motherfucker means what he says, or at least fools me.
The Pier would like to thank Arron for this interview and Chris for suggesting to do this interview in the first place and assistance with the questions.
