ANOTHER DAY INTERVIEW

Blazing out against the back-drop of the hot Arizona sun, comes popular reggae rock outfit, Another Day. Bassist Bryan Pino keeps The Pier informed with the latest.
The Pier: So for those that don't the band. How would you describe Another Day to them?
Bryan Pino: The three B’s: Booze, Blunts and Bitches.
The Pier: Haha, so how did you guys originally get together?
Bryan Pino: Another Day was a gradual build up. John (Ryan) and I have been jamming in punk bands throughout our middle school days. After going through drummer after drummer we finally found a perfect match with Phil (Schlemer) through mutual high school friends. Phil’s aggressive attacks and pounding double bass was exactly what was needed to plant the seed for Another Day. Gabe Radrigues came into the picture when I met him during symphony rehearsal in High School. There was this young kid who was wearing a Bob Marley shirt and wailing on vocals, it was the final ingredient. We immediately had a musical connection. We jammed out for about a year or so playing parties and played our first show in February of 2005.
The Pier: How has your home-state of Arizona influenced your music?
Bryan Pino: AZ has a cool party scene so we started rocking parties and that’s how we got our initial fan base. Nothing serious just jamming in front of crowds at pools in the summer and houses in the winter. The weather can also be unforgiving during the summer and the reggae vibes help to escape.
The Pier: Last year the band released its debut album. That must have been an exciting time?
Bryan Pino: It was a life changing experience working with the Scientist in LA. We started writing the tunes for or first album almost three years before it debuted so it was a relief to finally get them out to the public and on Itunes. When you get your final print in the mail, proofed and ready to be sold it is crazy to see years of work packaged in one small album, it’s a trip.
The Pier: So what was it like working with the Scientist in the studio? How did you hook that up and were you nervous about him producing the album?
Bryan Pino: It was definitely an honor working with a legend. He mixed everything from Yellowman to Half Pint to Jimmy Cliff in the 80’s for Studio One in Kingston, then moved to LA and was able to do tracks for Slightly Stoopid, which was obviously huge for us to work with anyone whos mixed those guys. He shows us a side of recording that we never knew about, like recording everything straight then doing all the dub “drops” later during mix down (which he does all in one take). He can be impulsive and critical, but when the meds are around everything is all good. All in all we made a lifelong friend and learned a lot.
Experiencing a different culture was awesome, as well as eating some homemade Jamaican food (tuna and rice with curry/jerk spice). When Scientist did live sound for us it was a huge learning experience as well, he has a interesting way of mixing he house sound first then putting it through the PA so everyone on stage knows what the audience is hearing. We rented a bunch of extra sound equipment to make it bump hard, it was dope.
The Pier: Is there any specific advice you remember him passing on?
Bryan Pino: - Dont use zig zags b/c they have glue that dehydrates and gives you cotton mouth;
- Must have a lot of ladies in the studio, the female vibes are always appreciated;
- Broken high hats sound good as well as a penny on the kick; and
- Recording horns in a big room is like night and day compared to a small room.
The Pier: Nice. The song Party Cups has been a really popular song for you. Why do you think that is?
Bryan Pino: It goes back to the entire AZ scene, the locals really identified with it. But the surprising thing is that it actually caught on big time to fans overseas and out East. It has a feel good vibe and it just extremely catchy, people can sense what it presented in the song is real and we are just four young guys that like to jam and have a good time.
The Pier: So you guys have been playing around for a while. What has been your most memorable show and why?
Bryan Pino: This is a hard question because there has been so many memorable shows. When we opened up for Matisyahu in front of a crowd of 3,000 had to be one of the craziest shows we have ever done. The crowd was putting off so much energy, it was great. Another great show was when we were doing one of our Cali tours and were fortunate to get to open for Long Beach Shortbus and Bargain Music in Long Beach Ca. We played at the famous Blue Café in Long Beach where Sublime played many of its first gigs. Being able to share the stage with Eric Wilson and Ras1 was amazing.
But our CD release has to make the list. The build up from the whole writing and recording process was finally done. We flew out the Scientist for live sound. Got back up vocals, percussion, and multiple guest MC appearances. We also had a killer turn out. Playing in front of almost 1,000 friends, family, and fans is the best feeling ever!
The Pier: Who would you like to tour with if you had the chance?
We are definitely down with the whole Silverback crew. Stoopid and Pepper would be a perfect opportunity for us. They are extremely influential to Another Day. For more of an international aspect we would definitely want to hop on tour with reggae legends Steel Pulse or dancehall superstars from Germany Seeed!
The Pier: What have you got coming up in 08? Will you be touring outside of AZ anytime soon?
Bryan Pino: We're putting together a brand new mix tape/ep, Another Day Another Dollar, we've been working with the Phunk Junkeez trying to bring out our rock roots on this one since the last was more reggae and its sounding pretty dope so far. We also will tour but its hard to make it out of the West when you go out with by yourself with no backing, but definitely expect to see us on the West Coast summer ‘08.

The Pier: And finally, what is your favorite summer hang-out destination?
Bryan Pino: Hollywood is gotta be our favorite place to kick it. The time we spent out there was great. We were able to meet a lot of really cool people. In Arizona you have to rep Salt River Tubing! Make sure you wear shoes, you will get shit on your feet! We wanna also give a shout out to Capo Beach/San Clemente, we made a lot of good friends out there. We had a lot of good times cruzin' up the coast of Cali.
Awesome. Thanks to Bryan and Another Day for dropping by The Pier. The AD crew are always welcome. To find out more about Another Day check out:
