As Toots and the Maytals preached, ‘Reggae got soul, got so much soul.’ So if you like your reggae mixed with a strong serving of some southern fried soul, then look no further than Three Legged Fox.

It is hard to believe, this band hailing from Philadelphia, was only together for less than a year when it recorded its debut album, Ideas. This is one mature album, but one with a carefree personality and a sunny disposition. This complicated balance is best demonstrated on the wandering Don’t Just Be and the joyful I Am.

Three Legged Fox lead singer, Kyle Wareham, possesses a strong warm vocal presence. Sometimes it’s uniquely accompanied by female soul singers on such tracks as the album opener On My Way Home and One World, One Heart, but he more than holds his own on the tender and album highlight Lies, Only Lies.

Supporting Wareham is the subtle but effective performances of Mike Brody (guitar), Eric Weinstein (bass) and Kory Kocherspreger (drums). The band is never showy and each individual plays for the song not personal glory. That is the true sign of mature musicians right there, happy to sit back and let the music guide them and only really working up a sweat on the rocking Move On.

Ideas, has some original thoughts and I am pretty sure Three Legged Fox has more exciting ideas brewing, as hinted on its new Live@ Grape Street release. Given more time playing together, things can only get better on an already impressive debut.
