Well it seems Tomorrow’s Bad Seeds prayers have been answered. That is if they were on their knees asking for a strong debut album that holds the listener’s interest from start to finish. Early Prayers easily achieves that.
Taking the Sublime blueprint of mixing reggae, rock and a little of hip hop, the Los Angeles quintet brings enough of its own unique sounds to offer something worthwhile to seek out. This uniqueness is at its strongest when vocalist, Moises Juarez, tries new vocal techniques such as on the radio ready Vices, the aggressive Warrior Poet and the light and easy Roundtrip.
It could be easy for one band to get lost amongst all these other new bands emerging with a strong Sublime influence. However, the TBS must have something special, as the band enlists some great guests here including: Philieano and Toko Tasi, I-MAN (Capitol Eye), 2mex of Sun God Sons, Ero and Awdball (Second Thought). All MCs adding their vocals and a welcomed diversity to songs like Ready Fe Rock and Gunslinger.
After keeping a rock steady pace through 14 tracks, it’s not till we reach the third last song on Early Prayers, where the band rocks to its most fullest on the excellent Downlow. I would love to see the band experimenting more with this fiercely energetic ska/punk style on future outings, as the TBS pull this off effortlessly here.
The Tomorrow’s Bad Seeds debut seemed like a long-time coming, but maybe that was due to my own eager anticipation as to what the band could muster together on a full-length record. It’s always a nice experience when you are not disappointed and it was worth the wait.
