One man band project Stick Figure AKA Scott Woodruff, has made a confident return with his follow-up album to the hugely popular independent release, The Sound of My Addiction. Maintaining a constant rhythmic flow from start to finish, Burnin’ Ocean slowly but effectively leaves subtle imprints in your consciousness.

None of the tracks are in a hurry and Stick Figure allows plenty of time for the hypnotic dub grooves to play out. Trouble Up There and We Get High are fine examples of this unique style Stick Figure has truly created as his own.

Jeff McDermont AKA Clear Conscience makes a brief but effective appearance on album opener White Fire, as the track gradually builds up steam. Further in, Stick Figure borrows the vocal melody on So Good from Tears for Fears Mad World, and the end result is a beautifully haunting dub track. The album finishes strongly with probably the catchiest song on the album, Songs of Yesterday. It’s an effective strategy, as it just makes you want to replay the whole thing over again.

To be honest, the first few listens of Burnin’ Ocean just got my attention enough to keep me interested and like a good album should, that interest turned into obsession. Stick Figure’s Burnin’ Ocean is a pleasant one to immerse and drown yourself in.
