Kapakahi

So Kapakahi is Hawaiian for ‘mixed up’? Ok that makes sense considering this band from San Francisco covers a broad range of musical styles on this its debut album. Dabbling in ska, reggae, pop, Latin, swing and more Kapakahi successfully blends it all into a tasty party-inspired concoction.
Twisted, Bent & Confused opens with a curveball, Body Glove, a delicious swing inspired groove and one I was not expecting when I first went to listen to the CD. However, never to stray for too long, Kapakahi mines one style, then like a bee to a flower, goes searching for a new source of golden goodness.
Featuring a solo lead saxophonist (Nick Rous), a handful of songs are reminiscent of Filibuster especially when the sax takes the lead on the reggae inspired Nice & Slow. Combined with a strong percussion presence this certainly gives the album its unique appeal, particularly on tracks like Africa and States of War. However, for me personally the band is most enjoyable through its lighter moments, as led by the Hawaiian born singer/guitarist Mike Dayao on the humorous My Bad (music vid below) and the wandering Stone Believer.
Overall there is a great sense of fun and musical ambition across Twisted, Bent & Confused, and when a band’s approach is so blatantly carefree, as listener it is almost impossible not to be also willingly taken along for the ride. Just like the real world, music is so much more interesting when things are Kapakahi.
